Me (in an emergency):"Yes 911, we have a problem."
Dispatches: "Ma'am, be calm, where are you?"
Me: "Well, I'm not sure, somewhere on I-20 I think...no, wait, looks like mile marker 221."
Dispatcher: "That's a long stretch of road, Ma'am. How do you expect us to find you in that mile?
Me: "Oh wait, it says 221.2."
Dispatcher: "Okay, we'll be there."

It's not just an Iowa thing.. In Minneapolis they have that too.. on I35W into Downtown.. I guess, like you said, if you get into an accident, saying you are by the Lake Street exit isn't enough... you would say, I am at mile marker.. 7.3 (or what ever it is..)Funny, I never noticed that in Iowa before.. Will have to watch for it at Thanksgiving time...
